Dear Sarah

One must treat a ringing phone as one would a demanding child and simply ignore it 'til it goes away.

Of course, with the phone you also have the option of throwing it against a wall, but I can't stress enough the importance of checking it's not a child first.

The telephone is a tyrant; it rings at mealtimes, during Dr Who and interrupts without apology.
I'm so well trained, I will stop a conversation mid-word to answer, in case it's important. The urgency of its tone suggests it could be the hospital, the BBC, or my mother; (usually, it's my mother). I do peek at the digital display before picking pu, but an unknown caller always prompts unrealistic expections; fame, money, etc.
Perhaps I should get a novelty ringtone? Some flat, monotone voice to call, 'it's only the phone, don't mind me, you just get on with what you were doing...'
I could get my mother to do the recording for me?
